Grooming More Frequently in Summer
Many Long Island dog owners drop to every 6–8 weeks in summer, but for dogs that swim, play in the yard frequently, or have heavy coats, 4–6 weeks is better. Sand, salt water, and humidity create the perfect environment for skin irritation, hot spots, and matting.
Don’t Shave Your Double-Coat Dog
This is one of the most common summer grooming mistakes. Shaving a double-coat breed — Goldens, Huskies, German Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dogs — does not keep them cooler. It disrupts the coat’s natural insulation, exposes skin to sunburn, and can permanently damage the coat’s texture. A proper deshedding treatment removes the undercoat correctly.
