Dog nail length is one of the most overlooked aspects of pet care — and one of the most impactful for your dog’s comfort and joint health.
Signs the Nails Are Too Long
- You can hear clicking when your dog walks on hard floors
- Nails curve or curl toward the paw pad
- Your dog slips on smooth surfaces more than usual
- Nails touch the ground when the dog stands flat
Overgrown nails force the paw into an unnatural position, which over time puts stress on joints all the way up the leg. In senior dogs, this compounds existing arthritis and mobility issues.
How Often to Trim
Most dogs need nails trimmed every 4–6 weeks. Active dogs who walk frequently on concrete may need less frequent trimming. Dogs who spend time mostly on grass or indoor surfaces will need more frequent trims.
