Why Doodle Coats Are High-Maintenance
The doodle coat is a genetic mix of two very different coat types. The result is usually wavy or curly, low-shedding, and prone to matting. Unlike a Lab or Beagle, doodle fur grows continuously and tangles easily — especially behind the ears, in the armpits, and around the collar. Without grooming every 6–8 weeks, mats form that require shaving to remove.
The Right Grooming Schedule
Every 6–8 weeks is the minimum. Doodles that go 10–12 weeks between appointments almost always develop matting that requires a shorter cut than the owner wanted. Between appointments, brushing 2–3 times per week with a slicker brush and metal comb — reaching all the way to the skin — prevents mat formation.
