Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds on Long Island — and one of the most underestimated when it comes to grooming. Labs have short coats, so many owners assume they don’t need much maintenance. In reality, Labs are heavy shedders with a dense double coat that needs regular attention, especially during spring and fall blowout seasons.
The Double Coat Challenge
Labs have a short, dense outer coat and a thick undercoat designed for water resistance and insulation. Twice a year — usually spring and fall — they shed the undercoat heavily. During these periods, the hair comes out in clumps and covers everything in the house. Regular brushing with a deshedding tool dramatically reduces the volume of loose hair and prevents the dead undercoat from trapping heat against the skin. For Long Island Labs who spend time at the beach or in the water, a good rinse after salt water exposure and a thorough brush-out once dry helps maintain coat and skin health.
Labs don’t need haircuts, but they do benefit from a full bath with deshedding shampoo and conditioner, blow-dry, ear cleaning, nail trim, and paw pad check at every grooming appointment. Ears are a particular concern for Labs — their floppy ears trap moisture and are prone to infections. Regular ear cleaning between grooming visits is a good habit.
Nail and Paw Care
Labs are active dogs, but activity alone doesn’t keep nails short. Most active Labs still need nail trims every four to six weeks. Overgrown nails change the way a dog walks and can lead to joint stress over time. After beach trips or hikes through Long Island parks, check paw pads for cuts, sand abrasion, or debris. A quick wipe-down after outdoor time keeps paws healthier between appointments.
