Adopting a Dog on Long Island: First Grooming Steps

You just brought home a new dog from a Long Island shelter or rescue. Congratulations. Here’s what to do (and what to wait on) for grooming in the first weeks home.

Give Them Time to Settle First

The first week at home is overwhelming for most rescue dogs. New smells, new people, new routines. Adding the experience of professional grooming on top of that can create negative associations. Unless the coat is truly in distress (heavily matted, significant odor, skin issue visible), give your dog 1–2 weeks to settle before the first grooming appointment.

Start Handling Early

While you’re waiting for that first appointment, start gently handling the areas that will be groomed: paws, ears, muzzle. Use treats and keep sessions short and positive. You’re not grooming yet — you’re building the muscle memory of being handled without anxiety. This makes the first professional appointment much easier.

Why Mobile Grooming Is Ideal for New Rescues

A rescue dog going to a traditional salon encounters unfamiliar dogs, noise, cages, and separation from their new family — all on the same day they’re still figuring out their new life. Mobile grooming eliminates almost all of that. The dog stays in their home environment. The owner can be steps away. It’s the lowest-stress introduction to professional grooming possible.
