Shedding Season on Long Island: How to Keep Your Home (and Dog) Under Control

Spring and fall bring shedding season, and if you have a double-coated dog in a Long Island home, you know what that means: fur on everything. Here’s how to manage it without losing your mind.

Why Dogs Shed Seasonally

Double-coated breeds — Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and many others — grow a thick undercoat in winter for insulation and then blow that coat in spring when temperatures rise. The same process happens in reverse in fall. During these “blow coat” periods, shedding dramatically accelerates for two to four weeks.

What Professional Deshedding Does

A professional deshedding treatment — a specialized bath with deshedding shampoo and conditioner, high-velocity blow-out, and thorough brushing with the right tools — removes the loose undercoat that would otherwise end up on your couch, in your car, and in your meals over the next several weeks. A good deshedding treatment can remove 60-80% of the loose undercoat in a single session.

Between Appointments: Home Brushing Tips

During shedding season, brush your double-coated dog every 2-3 days with an undercoat rake or slicker brush. A FURminator or similar deshedding tool once a week during peak shedding makes a significant difference. Brush outside whenever possible. Your vacuum will thank you.
