Ear infections are one of the most common reasons dogs visit the vet — and one of the most preventable with proper grooming habits. Here’s what Long Island dog owners should know about ear health and cleaning.
Why Some Dogs Are More Prone to Ear Problems
Floppy-eared dogs — Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Poodles, Doodles — have ears that trap moisture and limit airflow. Long Island’s humid summers create the perfect conditions for yeast and bacteria to thrive in trapped moisture. Dogs that swim frequently are at higher risk. Dogs with hair growing inside the ear canal (Poodles, Schnauzers) need that hair removed regularly to allow proper airflow.
Signs of an Ear Problem
Scratching at the ears, head shaking, odor from the ear canal, discharge, redness or swelling of the ear flap, or your dog tilting their head — these are all signs that something is wrong. If you see any of these, your vet needs to look before grooming continues. Cleaning an infected ear can be painful and make things worse.
What Groomers Do
At every Zoomin Groomin appointment, the groomer cleans the outer ear with an appropriate ear cleaner, checks for odor, redness, or discharge, and removes excess hair from the canal opening where applicable. If anything concerning is noted, we let you know so you can follow up with your vet.
