Doodles are one of the most popular dog breeds on Long Island — and some of the most misunderstood when it comes to grooming needs. Here’s what owners of Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and other doodle mixes need to know.
The Doodle Coat Problem
Doodles were bred to combine the retriever personality with the poodle’s low-shedding coat. But the resulting coat — usually a wavy or curly texture that falls somewhere between a retriever and poodle — mats faster than almost any other coat type. Unlike a poodle’s coat, which mats but can be managed predictably, doodle coats mat at friction points quickly: behind the ears, under the armpits, around the collar, at the base of the tail.
What Happens When Grooming Is Neglected
A doodle who goes 12 or 16 weeks without grooming often presents with mats so severe that the only option is a close shave-down — not because the groomer wants to, but because dematting a severely matted coat is painful and inhumane. Many doodle owners are heartbroken when they bring in their dog expecting a trim and leave with a puppy cut. The answer is consistent grooming, not longer intervals.
The Right Maintenance Schedule for Doodles
Every 6 weeks for professional grooming, plus brushing at home 3-4 times per week with a slicker brush and metal comb. Focus on the high-friction areas: ears, armpits, groin, collar area. If you hit resistance with the comb, work it out gently before it becomes a mat.
