If you have a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, or Bernedoodle, you may have noticed that grooming costs more than you expected. Here’s why — and how to manage it.
Doodle Coats Are Time-Intensive
A doodle coat is not like a poodle coat or a retriever coat — it’s a hybrid that combines properties of both in unpredictable ways. The result is typically a dense, wavy or curly coat that mats faster, requires more thorough brushing, takes longer to dry, and is harder to cut evenly than most other coat types. Groomers charge for time, and doodles take more of it.
The Matting Penalty
Doodles that arrive with significant matting require dematting work before any cut can happen — which adds time and cost — or a full shave-down, which most owners want to avoid. Staying on a 6-8 week schedule prevents mats from developing. It’s actually cheaper in the long run than going 12 weeks and paying for a dematting session.
